Ethiopians in Minnesota have raised a record amount of money in support of Patriotic Ginbot 7 Movement for Unity and Democracy. At a fundraising night on Sunday, Ethiopians have raised over 78, 000 dollars, which they said was a record amount raised for a political party in the history of the Ethiopian community in Minnesota.
Record number of Ethiopians were present at the event. At the fundraising night portraits of the gallant women fighters of Patriotic Ginbot 7 was presented for auction, while airport taxi drivers in Post Road, Minneapolis donated 10,000 dollars.
In a video message from Eritrea, chairman of the Movement, Prof. Berhanu Nega said the struggle is not to replace one dictator by another; but is rather to build a democratic Ethiopia. He said Patriotic Ginbot 7 is negotiating with all opposition forces that accept building a democratic and united Ethiopia. The Professor, who said the liberation forces will soon launch the struggle.
Mr. Neamin Zeleke, Head of Foreign Affairs for the external leadership and member of the PRG7 council, told the gathering that Patriotic Ginbot 7 was formed by the people for the people. He said the ideals of the Movement have now been well spread among Ethiopians from all walks life and underground structures are spreading in all corners of Ethiopia. Mr. Neamin likened the Movement as a spiritual force that exists in the heart and souls of freedom and justice seeking Ethiopians.
Reminding the gathering of the injustices committed by the TPLF, Mr. Neamin recalled the genocide perpetrated against the people of Gambella and the Ogden regions of Ethiopia , the persecution of Ormos, Amharas, Afars, as well as the displacement of hundreds of thousands Ethiopians from their homes under the pretext of construction and agricultural projects. He said thousands are left to suffer in the dungeons of the TPLF while others were denied of their basic rights.
He said Patriotic Ginbot 7 is well positioned among the Ethiopian army, whose generals are engaged in rampant plunder and blinded by ethnocentrism. The army had enough of the nepotism, the plunder, and incompetence of the TPLF generals who constitute 95% of the army’s leadership, Mr. Neamin said. The goal of Patriotic Ginbot 7 is to create conditions necessary for the establishment of a democratic Ethiopia where all political parties have a say in formulating the democratic process, according to Mr. Neamin.
Speaking about Eritrea, Mr. Neamin said he strongly believes Eritrea wants to see a stronger Ethiopia that’s at peace with itself. He rejected allegations that Eritrea wants to see a weaker Ethiopia. Patriotic Ginbot 7 however has no mandate at the moment to negotiate with Eritrea on strategic issues concerning the two countries, he said.
Mr. Neamin encouraged Ethiopians to intensify the struggle for freedom and democracy in Ethiopia by providing concrete and meaningful in material, moral, and diplomatic support. He called on Ethiopians in the US, Canada, and Europe to intensify the engagement with their congressmen, senators, parlamentarians to expose the crimes committed by the TPLF against the people of Ethiopia.
